I don’t know if the finance vest is even a thing anymore.
I can’t remember the last time I saw someone wearing one.
But while writing about dressing business casual , I remembered reading a post from a man who worked in one of those offices where everyone wore the same full-zip vest.
He hated it.
Or at least he thought he did.
I couldn’t remember whether he genuinely disliked the environment or whether he spent too much time online being told the vest represented something lame, soulless, or conformist.
Those are actually different kinds of discomfort.
If the environment itself feels deeply incoherent to you, forcing yourself further into the signaling system will probably become draining over time.
Other times the issue may not be the environment at all.
You may simply dislike how the vest feels or functions on your body.
In both cases, I don’t think the solution is dramatic self-expression.
It’s probably something more moderate.
Find an alternative that still meets the basic expectations of the environment without turning it into some reactionary “I’m bucking the system” performance.
Maybe that just means a sweater or a different jacket.
And eventually, maybe it means looking for another job.
But if the discomfort only appeared after reading style forums, the issue may be different.
At that point, you may have imported an entirely different audience into your workplace.
The internet is not your actual environment.
Your coworkers are.
I think online style culture can make people overly self-conscious about fitting into ordinary environments.
People become so hyper aware of internet symbolism that normal adaptation starts feeling aesthetically humiliating.
As if wearing certain clothing automatically means you’ve lost authenticity or individuality.
But it’s also possible the vest genuinely fits the workplace.
Or it feels normal locally.
Or he just likes it.
Most people are not dressing for fashion forums.
They are trying to remain employed and reasonably comfortable inside a specific environment.
Those are different priorities.
Sometimes the problem is the environment.
Sometimes the problem is somatic fit.
Other times the problem is becoming too aware of how the environment looks symbolically from the outside.
