Why the Red Cabbage Jacket Looks Right

A few weeks ago a video appeared in my Youtube feed.

An older English gentleman was harvesting a massive red cabbage from his garden. The cabbage weighed fifteen pounds.

The surprising part wasn’t the cabbage.

It was the outfit

He was wearing a purple fleece jacket and matching hat patterned with cabbage.

Apparently he had wanted a cabbage outfit to match as a celebration.

At first glance the clothing is ridiculous. No one would normally wear a cabbage-print fleece jacket.

But in that environment it looked completely natural.

He was standing in a greenhouse surrounded by vegetables. He was clearly excited about growing and cutting the cabbage. The jacket was just an extension of the environment he already lives in.

That’s why the outfit works.

If the same jacket appeared somewhere else, it would probably look staged.

But in a garden full of cabbage it feels completely coherent.

Of course, the internet is already asking where they can buy a cabbage jacket.

Which is how these things usually go.

One person grows a cabbage in their garden and buys a ridiculously charming jacket to match.

A few thousand people see it and decide “cabbagecore” might be an aesthetic.

But the jacket only really belongs in one place.

Next to a fifteen-pound cabbage.
