Can You Wear Racist Clothing?

Since I wrote that post on historical correctness I started an argument with myself.

If the historical significance of clothing isn’t that important, could you theoretically just wear something like a KKK robe or a Nazi uniform?

Maybe you just like the style.

I’ve written before that context matters in dress, but I also like to stress-test ideas.

A somatic approach actually answers the question pretty quickly.

Layer one: internal response.

You put on the garment.

You like it.

As a racist person, the garment makes you feel completely at ease and relaxed.

Great.

Let’s proceed to layer two.

Layer two: environmental response.

Does this meet the minimum requirements of the situation?

Does it create unnecessary friction?

Does it attract attention that destabilizes the environment around you?

Now you have a very simple decision to make.

How you proceed is your choice.

Some people prefer to invite unnecessary friction into their lives.

I personally do not.
